Undergraduate Research Programmers

Laboratory for Knowledge Discovery in Databases

The KDD Lab in Computing and Information Sciences (CIS) at K-State? is seeking undergraduate research programmers, for research projects in the areas of artificial intelligence and high-performance computing:

• Human-Computer Interaction (HCI): Graphics, Visualization, and User Interfaces
• Text Analytics and Information Extraction
• Natural Language Processing
• Data Mining from the Web
• Biosecurity

Necessary Qualifications

• Proficiency with Java, C/C++, or C#
• CIS 200 and CIS 300, or equivalent coursework and experience
• Ability to work 10-15 hours per week during the regular academic year

Ideal Qualifications

• One of CIS 301 (Logical Foundations of Programming), CIS 520 (Operating Systems), or equivalent coursework or background
• One of Stat 510 (Introduction to Probability and Statistics) or Math 510 (Discrete Mathematics)
• Experience with any of the following is a plus:
  • An integrated development environment (IDE) such as Eclipse or Visual C++/C#
  • A GUI development environment
  • Databases or artificial intelligence
  • Previous work on group projects
• Ideal candidates will be able to start immediately and remain with the group for at least one year

Our computing environment comprises a number of high-end Intel Core i7 and AMD Athlon 64 X2 workstations and AMD Opteron-based Beowulf cluster nodes, running Linux (especially Ubuntu, Fedora, and Gentoo), Windows 7, Solaris, and Mac OS 10 (10.3 Panther through 10.6 Snow Leopard).

Software components of our environment include IBM Eclipse, MS Visual Studio 2008, Borland JBuilder, Lisp, and Scheme; various expert system shells and scripting languages; and a vast array of visualization and computational mathematics packages (MATLAB, Mathematica, SAS, SPSS, NeuroSolutions?, etc.).

Compensation starts at $10 per hour with increases after 1-2 semesters, given satisfactory performance.

The KDD Lab is focused on fundamental research issues in information extraction (IE), probabilistic reasoning, and machine learning. Current applications include epidemiology, bioinformatics, text analytics, visualization, intelligent search, tutoring, critiquing, and IE from multimodal information sources.

We have a new opening for a post-doctoral research fellow (Ph.D. in CS or a related discipline required) and a research associate (M.S. in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics required) starting in May 2009. Research experience in artificial intelligence, cognitive science, computational linguistics, or data mining is preferred. Priority will be given to candidates with research interests in the areas of information retrieval, information extraction, natural language processing, or visualization. Screening begins May 4, 2009 and continues until the position is filled.
